By Tierra Negra, Courier Correspondent

A few years ago, before denying the visas for my children you took the time to call me in order to find out more about our situation. I am almost certain that you not only granted those last tourist visas, making it possible for us to reunite again for a whole summer but, you probably were the one that recommended my case to be revisited because I cannot find any other explanation that would have expedited my asylum petition stagnated since the tragic incident of September 11th.

I made an attempt to send some thank you flowers through my kids upon their return to Mexico and their belated requested visit to the consulate. Unfortunately, they were deterred by the guard who informed them that it was completely inappropriate since it would send the wrong message to whoever would notice this gesture.

After our phone conversation ended, my emotional state prevented me from taking note of your full name. Sadly, I am not even sure if a first name that lingers in my mind is the real one and it has been haunting me ever since.

I became atheist long time ago as a result of only encountering the unchecked evil side of most men since I can remember. Your act of kindness was the exception to the rule and I live grateful for it. What for you might have been the most natural ethical duty in an ordinary workday to my life it has made a big difference.

Beyond fixing my children’s status as soon as possible -like you repeatedly asked me to do during our phone conversation, I was finally able to give closure to many issues left pending in my country because I had to migrate to the United States of America.

I teach at a high sSchool. It has been now more than two years that my kids have been living with me. My son just graduated from high school with the best grades ever. After attending his academic act, organized by a Hispanic group along with other students, I came to the realization that it was about time I start doing something for them. I will begin tutoring next year aiming to increase their GPA.

I am traveling to Guadalajara this summer. It seems that I will finally be able to take steps into giving life to an association I have been dreaming about through which I can create alternatives that would prevent other women from following my terrible path.

I send you my best wishes along with my gratitude hoping that they will reach you wherever you are. Your act of kindness has found strong echoes in my heart and will never be forgotten.
