Editor's Note: Four of The Courier's staff recently dined out together.

Madfish is a little Japanese and sushi restaurant located right on Mowry Avenue in Fremont. The ambiance of the restaurant is very modern and clean and quite spacious. This place is usually packed on Friday and Saturday Nights due to its "Happy Hour" menu bargains.
Mark Godoy and Gurpreet Bhasin: It was our first time trying [The Lion King Roll] sushi, and we have to say, it was definitely worth it. This combination is the definition of delicious! It consists of California rolls topped with grilled salmon and creamy sauce. We liked that the presentation of the dish itself was well put together and it was also good quantity.

If you're a newbie when it comes to sushi, but want to try something different other than the most common California roll, we recommend this one! We know it's kind of intimidating to try sushi because of its different and sometimes unusual ingredients, but this one is not too far from the norm, and has a great taste. If you were to visit Madfish after 3, you receive 50% off this scrumptious dish!

Rae Atabay: Although the Lion King Roll was delicious, we couldn't say the same for the Crunchy California Roll. 'Crunchy'? More like soft and chewy. What made it worse was that when you bit into the roll, it completely fell apart, as if it was made in a rush and thrown together without a care to satisfy the customer. This drawback made is very difficult to even eat the sushi.

I was disappointed by the consistency, I thought it would at least win me over in flavor. Wrong. California Rolls are known to have delicious imitation crab, with creamy avocado, wrapped in seaweed and rice (and in this case, fried). No, this roll had a very bland tasting crab, with crunchy avocado due to it not being ripe. Definitely come to Madfish, but not for the Crunchy California Roll.

Candace Laxamana: "Madfish is a great sushi restaurant, but I don't really know about their Japanese-style foods. I had the Lunch Special Bento Box, which consisted of a California Roll, sushi, sashimi, and tempura. The taste was only passable. I felt as if the fish wasn't the freshest and so I didn't finish my meal. I ate more of the California Roll and tempura. This isn't the best sushi restaurant I've been to, but this isn't the worst either."

Overall we rate this restaurant 3 out of 5 stars.

Try it for yourself. http://www.yelp.com/biz/madfish-fremont
