T.J. Matsumoto is a member of the James Logan Varsity football team.
The James Logan Football Team was victorious over Balboa High School of San Francisco Saturday afternoon by a score of 57-35. Offensively we absolutely dominated and had a total of 641 yards. Star quarterback Jonathon Willis did not have his best game passing with two early interceptions but had over 300 yards of offense by himself and 5 touchdowns.
We started off the game with a touchdown drive that ended with a 15 yard touchdown pass from Willis to T.J. Matsumoto. It was my first varsity touchdown.
On film, Balboa did not look like a very good team and we underestimated them. After Victor Johnson was stripped of the ball on the 3 yard line they made a big play: a 97 yard touchdown pass and the score was tied 7-7.
On our next possession we turned the ball over on our side of the field and they scored on another touchdown pass to the same receiver. Our starting safety was taken out of the game to be talked to about a decision he made on offense that resulted in the turnover and our backup went in and got beat in man to man coverage. We fell behind 14-7.
On the next drive we did not mess around. We lined up in our muscle package and for lack of a better phrase; we ran it down their throats. It was a combined effort by Mister Simmons and Johnson. The drive was capped off by a Johnson touchdown.
After that our defense stepped up and got our offense the ball back quickly. Our offense then proceeded to score 3 more touchdowns before the end of the half.
One huge disappointment this week was the inability of our defense to stop them from making big plays. All five of their touchdowns were on long runs and passes. This was a total letdown. We went from giving up only 250 yards of total offense in the last two games to giving up over 400 in this one game. It was a sloppy game, but a win is a win.
We now have a short week of practice as we take on the American Eagles on Thursday at Tak Fudenna field. We will try to continue our dominance in league play so come out and support.
