Lawrence built the cannons himself and spent about $20,000, he said. Each cannon weighs at least 1600 pounds and can shoot up to three miles.
His cannon are replicas of circa 1861 civil war cannons, and he built these cannons three years ago on his ranch in Cottonwood, near Redding. He brings his cannons to Logan every year to display for those who are interested in learning about them.
For safety reasons, the cannons do not shoot cannon balls. The cannon replicas only emit smoke, highly regarding the safety of others. Real cannon balls would seriously injure and possibly kill many.
Lawrence wants to shoot his cannons at a James Logan Football game, but the school board has denied him permission. Lawrence also wished to showcase civil war rifles for teaching purposes, but the school board denied this as well.
