To be enrolled in regular kindergarten in 2007-08, a child must be 5 years old or must turn 5 before Dec. 2, 2007. For children who turn 5 between Dec. 3, 2007, and March 23, 2008, the District will offer the new mid-year kindergarten program beginning Jan. 28 and continuing through June 12.
Class will begin at 8:30 a.m. each day and be dismissed at 2 p.m. The program will be offered only at the new Cabello Student Support Center, 4500 Cabello St., on the site of the former Cabello Elementary School. There will be no charge, but parents will be responsible for transportation.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for parents of children who aren’t quite old enough to attend kindergarten to enroll their children in a quality program that will give them a solid foundation when they can enroll in regular kindergarten classes in 2008,” Superintendent Dr. Pat Jaurequi said. “We are very excited to be able to offer New Haven families another option for helping in the education of their children.”
The mid-year kindergarten program will be taught by fully credentialed teachers, through an agreement with the New Haven Teachers Association.
“This is another example of how working together with NHTA we are able to do more for our children,” Dr. Jaurequi said. The District and NHTA last year announced an agreement that enabled an all-day kindergarten program to be piloted this year at Pioneer Elementary School, as well as an agreement to increase learning time and improve staffing ratios at the District’s three middle schools.
“I’d like to thank (NHTA President) Charmaine Kawaguchi for her continued leadership as we work together to do what’s best for our students,” Dr Jaurequi said.
Enrollment in the mid-year kindergarten program will be limited, with first priority going to children whose families reside within New Haven and who turn 5 on or before the first day of the program. Subsequent priority also will be determined by age. If space still is available after District families have been accommodated, enrollment will be extended to children whose families live outside the District.
Enrollment packets will be available Nov. 1 at all New Haven school sites. Parents can enroll their children, starting Dec. 3, by calling 489-4141, ext. 200, to make an appointment at the Centralized Enrollment Center, also located at the Cabello Student Support Center.
