Changes to the New Haven Unified School District's email system have hampered The Courier's efforts to publish student-written stories for the past week, but the online paper will return to normal operation since the problems appear to have been ironed out.

The school district last week rolled out its new email system for teachers and staff members, a Novell product call GroupWise, to replace the antiquated and kludgy OpenMail system that served the district for the past several years.

Wrinkles in the roll-out resulted in stories submitted by staffers to The Courier via email being temporarily lost in the system of new email addresses and mailboxes. As a result, The Courier has relied more heavily than usual on its newswire service, MCT Campus, and readers were offered a dearth of locally produced stories.

Courier advisor Patrick Hannigan said Friday that he'd found most of the lost emails in an email box that he didn't even know existed, and which hadn't existed before the new system went online.

"Now that we've figured out the system, we'll be able to offer more of the student -written features and stories that Courier readers have come to expect," he said. "We apologize to our readers for the situation."

Logan students still are using the old OpenMail system, but will be switched over to the new system in the coming weeks, according to district computer system administrators.
